Kuala Lumpur was our first destination on our 1 Year traveling adventure. We found KL to be extremely modern and easy to navigate and also very multicultural. The best thing about KL was definitely the people! Always someone willing to help us along if we were lost and all with a big bright welcoming smiling!
You can and should visit some of the main tourist attractions in KL. Such as the Petronas Towers, Central Market, Jalan Alor and Batu Caves. (You can see our Batu Caves video here.) However Reti and I also like to get off the beaten path as much as we can to find the real heart of the places we are visiting.
So here are the two off the beaten track locations we visited during our time in KL:
Kampung Baru: This place is so fascinating. Kampung Baru is a small village, almost in the centre of the city, with great views of the Petronas Towers. You will see small cottages and local markets, almost as if you are in a rural village. The land that Kampung Baru is on is said to be worth billions, but the local people have refused to sell with the aim of maintaining their local way of life. We enjoyed lots of yummy street food in the market when we visited. If you want a slice of local malay life in the heart of the city then spend a few hours wandering around the streets of Kampung Baru! To reach take the Putra LRT to Kampung Baru station.
Pudu Wet Market: We love the atmosphere of markets, always bustling with life, colour and action. & Pudu Wet Market is no exception. Here you will find a local style open wet market selling everything from seafood, meats, vegetables and street food. This place is an injection of raw culture and character in such a modern city. So set foot and explore the narrow lanes and take in the smells and sights of this whirlwind marketplace. To reach the market take the Ampang LRT line to Pudu and it’s about 10min walk from there.
For more insight into these two locations you can check out our Kuala Lumpur off the Beaten Path travel video.
